Every February, people across the country especially the so-called “LOVERS” are exchanging gifts to one another. Candies, flowers, chocolates, teddy bears, cards, jewelries are also being given away to loved ones. And it is all being done in the name of St. VALENTINE.
There are actually lots of varying opinions as to the history of Valentine’s Day.
Some says it originated from St. VALENTINE (a holy priest who served during the 3rd century in Rome), who was martyred by Emperor Claudius II for refusing to give up Christianity.
One legend contends that when Emperor Claudius II decided that single men made better soldiers than those with wives and families, he outlawed marriage for young men — his crop of potential soldiers. Realizing the injustice of the decree, St. VALENTINE opposed Emperor Claudius and continued to perform marriages for young lovers in secret. But when St. VALENTINE’s actions were discovered, the emperor ordered that he be beaten to death with clubs and to have his head cutoff which was executed on the 14th of February 269 A.D., the same day that had been devoted to love lotteries. And in 496 A.D. Pope Gelasius set aside February 14 to honour the Saint.
Other legend says that St. VALENTINE may have been killed for attempting to help Christians escape harsh Roman prisons where they were often beaten and tortured.
According to one legend, it also says that St. VALENTINE actually sent the first “valentine’s” greetings. While in prison, it is believed that St. VALENTINE fell in-love with a young girl (who may have been a jailor’s daughter) — who visited him during his confinement. Before his death, it is alleged that he wrote a letter, which he signed “FROM YOUR VALENTINE” — an expression that is still in use today.
Although the truth behind the legend of St. VALENTINE is kinda obscure, the stories certainly emphasize his appeal as a sympathetic, heroic, and most importantly “romantic” figure. It’s no wonder why he considered to be the “patron saint of lovers” and that February 14 is being celebrated by lovers in honour of him.
