6.1 Magnitude Aftershock Earthquake Rattled Haiti

Last Wednesday (January 20, 2010), a week after a 7.0 magnitude earthquake that struck Haiti leaving 200,000 people dead; a strong aftershock once again hit the country around 6:03 am, just before sunrise while many people were still asleep. The aftershock was first estimated at 6.1 magnitude then later revised it to 5.9 magnitude alarming masses of people camping on the streets.

According to the US Geological Survey the said aftershock was centered 35 miles (56 kilometers) northwest of the country’s capital (Port-au-Prince) and 13.7 miles (22 kilometers) below the surface. It lasted for about 8 seconds, a little shorter compared to the devastating initial 7.0 magnitude earthquake that hit the country last 12th of January which lasted for 30 seconds.

The said aftershock was the latest in a series of dozens of aftershocks that have hit Haiti and at least one injury was reported in the moments of following aftershock. As of Wednesday, 3million Haitians were still in need of food, water, shelter and medical assistance according to a United Nation estimate.
