Earth Hour is a global event organized by WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature a.k.a. World Wildlife Fun) and is yearly held on the last Saturday of the month of March — which falls on the 27th of March this year at the same time — 8:30 till 9:30 in the evening.
Its purpose is to raise awareness to people all over the world towards the need to take action on the unstoppable climate change that is happening in our planet.
The Earth Hour originated by the WWF and The Sydney Morning Herald in 2007, wherein a total of 2.2 million residents of Sydney, Australia, participated in turning off all non-essential lights. So, following this event, many other cities around the world adopted this event in 2008 till the present.
Last year’s Earth Hour, our country — Philippines — topped this event amongst 88 nations (in terms of local participation in Earth Hour), according to the WWF Philippine representative. Filipinos are really very competitive to even defeated Australia. Indeed, “Sikat ang Pinoy!” ;) An estimated 10 million Filipinos in a total of 647 towns and cities participated in this event had been recorded.
And in this year’s Earth Hour, all the event organizers — WWF-Philippines, Department of Energy, Green Army Network Foundation and SWITCH Movement — aims to mobilize 15 million Filipinos in a total of 1000 towns and cities to take a symbolic stand against the climate change. And with “El Niño” wreaking havoc on the nation’s water, food and power supply, this year’s Earth Hour has assumed special significance.
So, let us all mark down our calendar for this year’s Earth Hour on March 27th at exactly 8:30 till 9:30pm and let us all join by switching off our lights for just 60 minutes and be a big help to our Planet! ;)
Hope we'll still rank number 1 this year :)
