Women's Month

March has been declared as the “Women’s History Month”, which is an annual commemoration that highlights the contributions of women to all events in history and contemporary society.

The event traces its beginning to the first “International Women’s Day” way back 1911 in Europe wherein March 8 was the first celebration of the said event.

Each year there is a specific “Women’s Month Theme” and for this year’s theme is “BABAE, TAGUMPAY KA NG BAYAN.”

It aims to highlights women’s achievement in paving the way for women’s advancement and empowerment amidst major challenges. Furthermore, it also celebrates the success of women’s commitment to pursue equality — which resulted in the enactment of the Magna Carta of Women (a comprehensive women’s human rights law which serves as the national translation of the UN-CEDAW (the International Bill of Rights for Women)) — and the achievements in the implementation of the Beijing Platform for Action (BPFA) and those related to the Millennium Development Goals (MDG).

2010 Women’s Month Calendar Activities in the Philippines

1. 1^st March — Walk for Women’s Right at the Fort, Taguig City
2. 8^th March — Women Entrepreneurship Summit at World Trade Center
3. 29^th March — Women with Disabilities Day (as per Presidential Proclamation 744, every last Monday of March is declared as Women with Disabilities Day)

The purpose of Women’s History Month is to increase awareness and knowledge of women’s history and to take one month of the year to commemorate the contributions of notable and ordinary women in the society. :)
